Haydn’s Concerto No. 11 for piano and orchestra followed, with Graf in top form, with a perfect mechanism in the service of a subtle musical intelligence. He knew how to communicate Haydn’s message, avoiding overloading or overflowing, with an exact dynamic gradation and a sober expressive force. Graf also did not forget to emphasize the intimate side of the composer with admirable lyricism in the Adagio where the clear balance of the piano joined the” tutti “in moments of profound musicality. Then came Symphonic Variations for piano and orchestra by Cesar Franck. Graf approached his part with a clarity and simplicity in the purest Franckian spirit. Among the outstanding qualities of the soloist are privileged memory, diaphanous fingering and phrasing, his precise concept of the dynamics and structure of the work as well as his tight control of sound balance.
